Why Berlin?

A center for business, politics, and culture, and an ideological crossroads where East meets West, Berlin is the driving force for Germany in the 21st century.

The IES Abroad Berlin Language & Area Studies Program
Drawing on the city's rich history as well as its status as a center for both political and cultural development, the IES Abroad Berlin Language & Area Studies Program offers you the opportunity to study German in one of the world's most vibrant cities. 

Program Details

  • Improve your German through IES Abroad language courses.
  • Take IES Abroad German-taught area studies courses taught by German faculty at the IES Abroad Center. Courses are available in a variety of areas including: German Language and Literature, Art History, Business, Economics, Film Studies, History, Media, Political Science, Social Sciences.
  • Fully matriculate at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
  • Enjoy access to courses at additional universities in Berlin including the Freie Universität, Technische Universität, and Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee.
  • Experience Berlin and learn first-hand about the history and culture of the city through field study excursions and cultural events.

Additional Exciting Program Aspects

  • Gain international work experience and unique cultural exposure through internships in business, cultural institutions, social and educational organizations, theater, politics, history, mass media, and teaching.
  • Experience German culture through housing with local residents throughout the city.
  • Travel to cities in Germany and Eastern Europe through IES Abroad field trips. Destinations may include Budapest, Bratislava, Dresden, Gdansk, Krakow, Potsdam, Prague, and Warsaw.
