Study Abroad in the European Union

Why the European Union?
The European Union is not only an important political and economic institution, but a community of nearly 500 million citizens and one of the largest markets in the world. As the European Union continues to grow in size and influence, understanding it becomes key to understanding Europe and our world.

The IES Abroad European Union program is centrally located in Freiburg, Germany, a picturesque university town and an ideal starting point for exploration of Europe and the institutions governing the European Union.

The IES Abroad European Union Program

The IES Abroad European Union Program allows you to study the development and activities of the EU from a central European location in Freiburg, Germany. Field study trips are integral to the program and bring you to sites important to the affairs and interests of the European Union and its plans for the future. All courses are taught in English. The program is ideal for students majoring in Economics, Political Science, International Relations, and International Business.

Program Details

  • Study the European Union in-depth through the required EU Studies Integrative Seminar, which provides a context for all coursework.
  • Choose from a variety of IES Abroad courses that emphasize the historical and institutional development of the EU, its internal policies, issues of culture and multiculturalism, and its relations with outside nations.
  • Participate in the Model European Union simulation and debate issues of current concern in the EU.
Field Study Highlights

  • Visit key EU organizations in Western Europe through integrated field study. Destinations include the:
    • Council of Europe in Strasbourg
    • Court of Justice in Luxembourg
    • Commission and Council of the EU in Brussels
    • European Central Bank in Frankfurt
    • European Parliament in Strasbourg
    • European offices of the OECD and the World Bank in Paris
  • Travel to newly-accepted EU states such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.
  • Meet with EU and government representatives of member states, leaders in multi-national corporations and NGOs, official advisors on EU issues, leading academics, and entrepreneurs.
Additional Exciting Program Aspects
  • Gain international work experience and unique cultural exposure through post-program internships in Freiburg or Brussels.
  • Live with German and international students through housing in university residences.
