A fascinating city of 1.8 million people, Vienna has preserved the best of its rich history and culture, while opening itself up to the contemporary challenges it faces both as the capital of a member state of the European Union and as the most important gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. Situated on the Danube River at the edge of the majestic Austrian Alps, Vienna is also a charming city yet cosmopolitan metropolis--and its unparalleled opera houses, museums, and theaters are as famous today as they were a century ago.
